Broadway, as always, is giving us lessons on language and its connection to music. The stellar new production of “Purlie Victorious,” not seen on Broadway since 1961, is Exhibit A. If the production discomfited me in any way it was that every 15 minutes I was waiting for someone to start singing. To impersonate the cousin, Purlie enlists an awkward young woman, Lutiebelle, who in the process falls in love with him. The play was written by Ossie Davis, who played the lead in the original production alongside his wife, Ruby Dee, as Lutiebelle.

Adidas is now asking West to return $75 million of marketing funds, per Bloomberg. The rapper previously said he spent $50 million of marketing money on his gospel choir tour. It relates to a marketing fund that was worth $100 million a year, according to court documents seen by Insider. Adidas says $75 million was paid into two Yeezy bank accounts, but Ye and the companies "mishandled virtually all of the marketing funds," by failing to keep it separate and spending on unauthorized purposes, per Bloomberg. In a 2020 interview on Nick Cannon's podcast, Ye said that he spent $50 million of Yeezy marketing funds on Sunday Service — his gospel choir tour that included flights to Jamaica for 120 people.

Blur quite simply knock it out of Wembley’s capacious park, playing a superbly varied setlist of both hits from their mid-1990s heyday, and more reflective album tracks. Singer Damon Albarn was at times emotional -- a measure of how much the achievement of playing Wembley means to him and the band. The 10 p.m. curfew means a wistful “The Universal” echoes in people’s heads as they make their way home. Blur limit their outings such that fans appreciate them all the more when they do tour. A full Wembley crowd of all ages shows that they’re likely to retain their place in a new generation of hearts – just as Springsteen, McCartney and Elton have done – for years to come.

On Her Debut Album, Olivia Dean Is Already Pushing Ahead

Olivia Dean could easily have stayed in one lane for her debut album, “Messy.” She has been on a glide path to a career in smooth English pop-soul. Dean, 24, has been releasing songs since 2018 — long enough to make her first album feel like a turning point instead of an introduction. She was born in London — to a Guyanese-Jamaican mother and an English father — and soaked up music from her father’s album collection. And like Amy Winehouse, Adele, Leona Lewis, Raye, Jessie J and Imogen Heap, Dean showed enough youthful talent to attend the star-making BRIT School of performing arts. Like other newcomers, Dean gained attention for a featured vocal with an electronic act, performing “Adrenaline” with Rudimental in 2019.
